Create & resist screenings presents: 14th of March, 20:30, Cinema OT301 Amsterdam The end of the Line Imagine an ocean without fish. Imagine your meals without seafood. Imagine the global consequences. This is the future if we do not stop, think and act The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans. In the film we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food. It examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation. Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to the oceans.
Director: Rupert Murray , 74 min, English spoken Sunday 14th of March 2010 - Start 20:30 OT301, Overtoom 301, Amsterdam Damage 4 euro

Gaza Documentary Monday the 18th of January 2010: There will be a worldwide screening of the documentary ' To shoot an Elephant'. On this Global screening day there will be a focus on the occupation of Gaza by the Isreali's (and Egypt goverment) 1 year after the horrible attacks on Gaza, director Alberto Arce comes with a eyewitness report of the Gaza War. In the Netherlands the documentary will be screened in 3 places, Format23 helpt organizing the screening in The filmhuis Cavia / Cinema Cavia based in Amsterdam. Before the screening starts there will be a speaker who was part of the Gaza Freedom March from last month in Egypt. She will talk about the experience of this freedom march and the problems they encountered in Egypt About the documentary de film: To Shoot an Elephant is a film portrait of Gaza under the Israeli embargo. Director Alberto Arce was embedded with the International Solidarity movement, one of the few aid organizations still operating in the area. We are given insight into everyday life in the region through a series of vignettes he filmed between December 25, 2008 and January 16, 2009, focusing particularly on the ambulance services that pick up the wounded and the dead (always referred to as "martyrs") from the streets. The aid workers are risking their own lives, too, because in contravention of the Geneva Convention, the Israeli forces shoot to kill. Although Mohammad Rujailah, the filmcrews' fixer, is credited as co-director, he is also one of the film's central figures. Calmly, but making no attempt to disguise his despair and rage, he calls the international community -- and by extension the audience -- to account. The film's title refers to "Shooting an Elephant," a 1936 essay by George Orwell in which he denounces colonial politics -- as the author does throughout his oeuvre. And just as in Orwell's historical fiction, To Shoot an Elephant presents broad political issues through a small cross-section of, in this case Palestinian, everyday life. read more @ http://toshootanelephant.com read interview with director of 'To Shoot an Elephant' http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article10890.shtml So come Monday the 18th of january @ 20.30 to cinema Cavia Filmhuiscavia - Van Hallstraat 52-I (trap op) - 1051 HH Amsterdam |

This month the exciting but shocking documentary about the annually dolphin slaughter in Taiji Film starts @ 20:30 The Cove Eco-activist documentaries don't get much more compelling than "The Cove," an impassioned piece of advocacy filmmaking that follows "Flipper" trainer-turned-marine crusader Richard O'Barry in his efforts to end dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan. Casting a very wide net, this powerful polemic is simultaneously love letter to a beloved species, an eye-opening primer on worldwide dolphin captivity. Director: Louie Psihoyos, 94 min, English spoken & subtitled Tuesday 12 januari 2010 - start 20:30 OT301, Overtoom 301, Amsterdam http://createresist.wordpress.com www.thecovemovie.com

The 4th of december 2009 i went to Brussels for the Council Conference. Council is a new think-tank of designers, thinkers, policy-makers and businessmen around the issue 'the future of the Internet of things'. The internet of things is better known by the RIFD Tag, a small tag that will be placed in your new passport, this tag will be the new barcode of the short future, with the big difference that this tag can 'communicated' with other devices and tracked everywhere in the world. This RIFD holds big promises for the future but also (and not the least) it brings a lot of dangers around issues of privacy, security and controlling governance. With the inevability of stopping this new technology we have to be prepared and think wisely about the challanges ahead. And that's what's Council in my opinion is trying to do. An inspiring day of meetings, presentations and 'interactive' workshops with top of the bill presentations from researchers, designers and policy-makers of Europe. Format23 was there to film the event and made small impressions of the day.You can find the impressions of the meetings and workshops @ Youtube Council Conference Channel The Council Conference was held in IMAL and organized by Rob van Kranenburg & Tinker it. http://www.youtube.com/councilconference |
